There is something yellow in the soil. Is it gold? Repurposed materials often look insignificant.

They are wastes and eyesores to many people, such as coal ashes or reservoir sludge. After iterative experiments, however, they can become reliable basic materials in different properties.

While these materials are not gold, they receive comparable attention and treatment.

Recycled Material Collection

Ashes or sludge often arrive in piles. Normally, they are treated as waste and overlooked. These materials are never in short supply. The issue is about abundance. If you want to move these mountains, you need trucks and ideas about their afterlife.

Material Property Tests

Even though cleaning is not needed for these materials, preliminary selection ensures consistent quality. The next key step is iterative tests and experiments to explore applications. Tests are conducted not only on these materials, but also in combination with other materials. At this stage, designers may find themselves more like chemists.

Design and Modular Productions

To utilize recycled materials, they are broken down to smallest units for new use cases. These products often need special molds, and each production requires exclusive processes and molds.

Design and Experiments for New Opportunities

Before they are reused, these materials are left in piles unwanted. As they cannot be reused directly, it takes unique perspectives and imagination to identify new opportunities. To expand applications, we try to combine various materials. We also conduct basic studies and experiments, in order to figure out their capabilities.

By observing raw materials in different conditions, designers can understand how many possibilities are potentially available. With appropriate stimulators and patience, we can deliver desirable results with seemingly useless materials.

Fly Ash

Coals from different times and regions come with unique mineral proportions. After burning in high temperatures, their ashes often demonstrate special color tones. Fly ash and bottom ash are very different in properties. Bottom ash is slag collected from the bottom of boilers. They are light in weight, porous, and absorbent.

Sediments are accumulated underwater due to gravity. Hydropower plants generate electricity by taking advantage of water level differences. In the process, mud and sand silt up in reservoirs. The hydropower plant at Sun Moon Lake uses approximately 700 million tons of water annually. With about 400,000 cubic meters of sediments, dredging is done regularly to ensure reservoir health. Each year, around 5,000 to 10,000 cubic meters of sludge are dredged annually.
